Sharpness & Oversharpening Test

High-contrast radial spokes, concentric rings, 1px alternating pixels, and typography samples designed to expose edge halos (ringing) caused by excessive monitor sharpness, or fuzzy text caused by under-sharpening.

Technical Scope & Limitations

Evaluates the combined result of monitor OSD sharpness, GPU scaling filters, and browser rendering.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

Testing Instructions
  1. Enter fullscreen mode.
  2. Look closely at the high-contrast black edges on white backgrounds.
  3. If you see a glowing white line or halo surrounding dark shapes, your monitor Sharpness is set too high (causing ringing).
  4. Reduce monitor Sharpness until halos disappear and lines remain crisp.

Common Display Problems & Diagnostic Guidance

The "Neutral" Sharpness Setting

On many monitors, the neutral (unprocessed) setting is not 50%. On Dell and LG monitors, 50% is often neutral, while on Samsung monitors, 0% or 60% can be neutral. Adjust until halos vanish completely.

Why does higher sharpness make my image look worse?

Digital monitors already have fixed physical pixels. Artificial sharpening creates luminance spikes around edges, introducing visual noise, ringing, and fatiguing jagged text.
