What is Backlight Bleed & When Should You Return a Monitor?

1. Why Backlight Bleeds
Liquid crystal displays do not emit their own light. They rely on an LED backlight array behind a diffuser sheet, passing through an active liquid crystal matrix.
If the monitor frame is screwed together too tightly, warped, or has uneven bezel tolerances, light escapes around the edges of the liquid crystal layer, producing bright yellowish, bluish, or white clouds along the borders.
2. Normal Tolerances vs. Defective Panels
Almost every edge-lit IPS and VA monitor will have a faint amount of luminance non-uniformity in pitch black darkness at 100% brightness.
However, if bright torchlight-like cones intrude noticeably into normal 16:9 movie letterbox bars or dark desktop backgrounds at normal room brightness (100–120 nits), the panel is defective.
Always photograph backlight bleed with locked manual exposure! Smartphone cameras automatically overexpose dark scenes, making normal displays look like catastrophic light disasters in photos.
