Visual Calibration Assistant

A guided 10-step visual calibration procedure to optimize your monitor on-screen display (OSD) settings. Walk through environment preparation, brightness, black level, white level, contrast, gamma, color, sharpness, banding, and final verification with the ScreenCheck Reference Pattern.

Technical Scope & Limitations

This is a guided Visual Calibration Assistant. It optimizes monitor OSD settings via your eyes. It is NOT professional hardware calibration and cannot generate an ICC profile.

Hardware Note: Visual calibration optimizes on-screen display (OSD) controls for your viewing environment. It is not equivalent to instrumented hardware probe calibration.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

1. What to Adjust

Room illumination, ambient glare, and monitor picture mode presets.

2. What to Look For

Eliminate direct sunlight or light bulb reflections hitting the screen surface. Sit in your standard upright posture.

3. Common Mistake

Calibrating a cold monitor immediately after turning it on. Let LED backlights stabilize for 15–20 minutes before making final adjustments.

What This Test Checks

  • Environment lighting and viewing conditions.
  • Backlight brightness and black level (shadow retention).
  • Contrast and white saturation (highlight retention).
  • Gamma curve 2.2 visual alignment.
  • Sharpness and edge ringing elimination.
  • Gradient smoothness and final reference pattern review.

How to Perform the Test

  • Let your monitor warm up for 15–20 minutes before starting.
  • Adjust ambient room lighting to eliminate glare and direct reflections.
  • Follow the 10 steps in sequence, using your monitor physical OSD buttons.
  • Click Next to proceed through each calibration pattern.

What to Look For

  • Balanced black levels where RGB 2–4 are visible, but true black stays deep.
  • Crisp text and sharp edges without white halo ringing.
  • Neutral grays without green or pink color casts.

Software Controls vs Monitor OSD Buttons

Always adjust monitor physical buttons (OSD menu) first. Software graphics sliders in Windows/macOS compress video output bit-depth, which can cause color banding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this create an ICC profile?

No. Generating a true ICC color profile requires an optical measurement sensor (colorimeter). This assistant visually guides you to set your monitor OSD controls for optimal human perception.
