Blooming / Halo Test

Blooming occurs on FALD and Mini-LED screens when light from a backlight zone spills into adjacent dark pixels. Allows user-controlled cursor/shape movement to inspect halo size and intensity.

Technical Scope & Limitations

Subjective visual inspection. Halo visibility is heavily influenced by off-axis viewing angle and room illumination.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

Testing Instructions
  1. Move the bright shape around your screen using your Mouse, Touch, or Arrow Keys.
  2. Look directly at the shape, then view it from a slight angle.
  3. Notice if a foggy halo or glow surrounds the object as it moves across zone boundaries.
  4. Switch between Circle, Square, Text, and Multi-Highlight shapes.

What This Test Checks

  • Visible halo/blooming radius around bright objects on pure black (#000000).
  • Off-axis viewing angle halo amplification.
  • Backlight zone tracking latency as objects move across zone boundaries.

How to Perform the Test

  • Move the bright highlight across the screen using your mouse cursor, touch, or keyboard arrow keys.
  • Observe the shape head-on, then view it from a 30° to 45° angle.
  • Toggle between circle, square, text, and dual highlight modes.

What to Look For

  • A soft cloudy glow surrounding the white shape is blooming. Minimal blooming head-on is ideal; blooming typically worsens off-axis on VA and IPS Mini-LED panels.

Off-Axis Blooming Amplification

Liquid crystal light transmission increases significantly at off-angles, making halos appear 3x to 5x larger when viewed from the side.

Is blooming avoidable on Mini-LED displays?

Some degree of blooming is physically inevitable on any display where backlight zones are larger than individual screen pixels. Self-emissive OLEDs do not exhibit backlight blooming.
